Our story began in 1997, when our founding partner, Island entrepreneur and restaurateur Kevin Murphy, established Murphy’s Brewing Company next to the Lone Star Café at 449 University Avenue in Charlottetown.
As the beer brewed on-site became more popular, the brewery was relocated to a 19th-century mansard-roofed building located in downtown Charlottetown in November of 2000. Renamed the Gahan House Brewery (in honor of the original owner, a prominent merchant) this move doubled its production capacity and gave the brewery a permanent home in Olde Charlottetown at 126 Sydney Street.
In July of 2008, Gahan Brewery established an off-site location on Walker Drive in Charlottetown and began production of bottled product, featuring the two most popular brands – Sir John A’s Honey Wheat Ale and Island Red Premium Red Ale. Islanders once again proved their loyalty to the product as sales of the bottled product skyrocketed, leading to the bottling of two additional brands in 2011 – Iron Horse Brown and 1772 IPA.
In June of 2011, Gahan Brewery was awarded the prestigious Gold Medal from the Canadian Brewing Awards for its top selling brand, Sir John A’s Honey Wheat, proving once and for all that Island-made beer products could compete in the global marketplace. This validation and the exponential growth of the craft beer industry in Canada led Kevin Murphy to form a partnership with another local entrepreneur, Jeff Squires, to build The Prince Edward Island Brewing Company.
The Prince Edward Island Brewing Company was established in February 2012, and immediately an expansion of the brewery was undertaken. Under the leadership of Jeff Squires, the company built a brand new brewery at 96 Kensington Road in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, which opened in May of 2013. Working with international beer experts, the PEI Brewing Company won Gold and Silver Medals at the 2012 Canadian Brewing Awards and a Silver Medal at the 2013 Canadian Brewing Awards. The new state-of-the-art facility features the latest technology available in the brewing industry, built by Diversified Metal Engineering of Charlottetown.
The company currently brews and distributes the Gahan Line of Handcrafted Ales and the first canned craft beer in Atlantic Canada – Beach Chair Lager. In Prince Edward Island, our products are available at our brewery, at the Gahan House Pub on Sydney Street, at any PEI Liquor Commission outlet and at fine establishments across the Province. We can also be found in select locations in New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, and Alberta. Stay tuned to the “Find Our Beer” section to see where else you’ll find us.
